The Fair Credit Reporting Act protects the rights of individuals and the way their credit report is used.
Below is a summary of your rights. Visit the FCRA website for a complete list of your rights.
You must be told if someone uses information in your credit report against you.
You are entitled to see what is in your credit report for free.
You have the right to ask for a credit score, but you must pay a fee for this service.
You can dispute inaccurate or incomplete information. The reporting agency is required to investigate.
Information that is incorrect in your credit report must be corrected.
Outdated information must be removed from your report. Negative info older than 7 years and bankruptcies older than 10 years.
Limited access to your file. Only people with a valid need can see your file.
A credit reporting agency cannot give out information in your file to an employer without your consent.
In some cases where a person or agency violates the terms of the FCRA you may be able to sue those responsible.
